Cyril “Pete” Mathieu, 80, Altoona, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Wesley Mathieu and Audrey Mills. On May 15, 1982, he married Christine Mathieu (Leaper). He and his wife retired to Sun City Center, Fla., in 2013 until their move back to Pennsylvania.

He is survived by his wife; three children: Kevin (Mandy) of Hanover, Md., Jay (Jodi) of Howard and Kelly (Rodger) of Altoona; three stepsons: Scott (Janet) Grassmyer of Sarasota, Fla., Kevin (Kelly) of Altoona and Chad (Angela) of Millersburg; grand­children: Arjay, Logan, Sarah, Tristan, Alec, Ashley, Chase, Bradley, Hunter and Skyler; and great-grandchildren, Genna and Sam. He is also survived by a brother, Jim.

He was preceded in death by siblings: Catherine, Charles Mills, Susan Cordell, Genevieve Mills and Dorthy Jean. He was also preceded in death by a very special aunt and uncle, Nick and Catherine Spiridigliozzi.

He was a 1960 graduate of Altoona High School. He proudly served his country from 1961 to 1963 in the U.S. Army. While working at FL Smithe Machine Company in Duncansville, he earned an associate degree in business administration at Penn State Altoona and a degree in accounting from Saint Francis University, Loretto. He retired as an Assistant Directing Business Representative with District 98 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. He was also the Secretary Treasurer of the Pennsylvania State Council of Machinists. Pete served in various positions in Local Lodge 2348 of the IAMAW, including president for over 20 years while working for the FL Smithe Machine Company.

Pete loved spending time with his children, stepchildren and all of his grandchildren. He coached Little League baseball and was the first president of the Independent Youth Baseball League. He was a member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Sarasota, Fla.

Friends will be received from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, March 20, 2023, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home, Inc., 719 N. Fourth Ave., Altoona, where a memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Pastor Barry Folmar officiating. Inurnment will be made at Carson Valley Cemetery.
