Weigand

  Donald E Weigand

Jan. 8, 1941 – Nov. 1, 2016

Donald Eugene Weigand, 75, Summerville, S.C., formerly of Altoona, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday after a battle with an extended illness.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Paul and Mary (Stiver) Weigand. On July 14, 1979, he married Linda Eckard.

Surviving are his wife; three daughters: Melissa Nolan and husband, Leland Nolan, of Summerville, S.C., Krena Leberfinger and husband, Tim Leberfinger, of Altoona, and Chrissy Latta and fiance, George Everhart, of Altoona; a son, Kevin Weigand of Jacksonville, Fla.; nine grandchildren: Kaylee, Brianna, Timothy, Nicholas, Britney, Shannon, Jared, Kyle and Hannah; four sisters: Nancy, Margorie, Mary and Beth-Ann; and a brother, Howard.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Weigand.

Don was a graduate of Altoona Area High School. For many years, he worked at Bowl America, Fairfax, Va., and managed a Citgo station. He also spent many years as a bartender and beer delivery driver. Recently, in his retirement, he was a driver for Skills of Central PA. He was a member of Simpson-Temple United Parish, Altoona.

Don was so full of life, and his smile and laugh were infectious! To him, no one was ever a stranger. He would walk up to anyone with that big smile and blue eyes and start a conversation like he had known them for years. He enjoyed bowling, fishing and sports with his favorite being football, and his favorite teams were the Pittsburgh Steelers (but only when they won), Penn State Nittany Lions, Michigan Wolverines, Pittsburgh Pirates and Pittsburgh Penguins. He loved to be outside and tend to his yard.

Most importantly, he loved spending time with his family and all of his grandchildren. His favorite holiday was Christmas, and he always had the nicest decorations in the neighborhood, and he prided himself on that. He loved to listen to Roy Orbison and Elvis, and one of his favorite stories, that he would tell everyone, was that Elvis and he shared the same birthday and that he was lucky enough to have seen Elvis in concert.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, 2016, at Derman Funeral Home, Tyrone, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7, 2016, at Simpson-Temple United Parish, Altoona, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Pastor Denise Arpino officiating. Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park, followed by a fellowship lunch at the church.

I am adding the loss of another classmate in just a few days.  I looked several times at the notice in the Altoona Mirror for Donald Weigand.  He was born in 1941, but I thought he was in our class, so I went looking.  Sure enough he was there living in Summerville SC.  He was also on our missing list and I am sorry that we found him this way. The obituary told a nice story of his life, especially he liked to listening to Elvis and Roy Oribonson.  We all remember doing that.  RIP Donald Weigand   Sandy

I remember Don. He used to work at Holiday Bowl in Altoona. We were on the Stiver's Atlantic 4 man team in 1961-19622. We won the "League Championship - 1961-1962" title that year and I got a Championship patch, a belt buckle for "Most Improved Average - 1961-1962.", and a trophy. We had some great times. I missed seeing Don at our last reunion and had hoped to see him at our next one. He will be missed.
